Guerin Tosses Strong Outing as St. Norbert Earns Win with Late Rally

Auburndale, FL – Kayden Guerin threw seven strong innings with 10 strike outs as the Roos held a 2-1 lead, but St. Norbert used a late rally to earn a win against the SUNY Canton baseball team during the second day of their spring break trip on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos had the better of the chances over the first four innings outhitting St. Norbert 3-0. Canton got runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but a pair of strike outs ended the threat.
  • The Green Knights got a runner to third with one out in the fourth but were unable to bring the runner across.
  • Guerin took a shutout threw five innings with two walks and eight strike outs, but St. Norbert finally broke through in the top of the sixth.
  • With runners on second and third the Green Knights scored on an RBI ground out, but Canton limited the damage as Guerin got a grounder to third to end the frame.
  • Barone drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the seventh and Nick Shoemaker followed with a pinch hit single. Barone and Shoemaker both registered stolen bases to move to second and third with no outs. With one out Derek Maldonado ripped a 2 RBI pinch hit double down the left field line to give the Roos their first lead of the game at 2-1.
  • The Green Knights rebounded with nine runs on eight hits in the eighth inning to blow open a 10-2 lead after eight.
  • The Roos added one run in the ninth on a pair of St. Norbert errors for the 10-3 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Maldonado, Shoemaker, Barone, John LaPorte, Eliezer Vazquez, Alfredo Pabon and Tom Santo all had one hit each for the Roos.
  • Jaden Holgado led St. Norbert with three hits, three runs and 2 RBI, while Devin Geary and Trevor Reinhardt had two hits, a walk and RBI each.
  • Marty Walsh picked up the win for the Green Knights throwing one inning in relief allowing one hit with two strike outs.
  • Guerin threw seven innings with 10 strike outs and two walks giving up one run as he was credited with the no decision. Javier Chico took the loss after allowing three singles and three runs over three batters in the eighth.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action Tuesday when they play a doubleheader at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport. The team will take on Mount St. Mary College in their opener at 9 a.m. followed by the College of St. Scholastica at 12:30 p.m.
