Mesler Nets Game-High Six Goals in Season Opener at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Junior Austin Mesler recorded a game-high six goals but a strong last three quarters carried host Plattsburgh State to a 21-8 win in the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team's season opener on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got off to a great start to the contest scoring back-to-back goals over the first three minutes off the sticks of Mesler and Michael Newcomb. Canton would hold Plattsburgh State scoreless for the first 6 minutes and 38 seconds.
  • The Cardinals broke the scoring drought with two scores in a 32 second span. Mesler helped Canton regain the lead at 3-2 with his second goal of the game, both of which were assisted by Caeden Goodnough.
  • From there the hosts rattled off three straight and six of the next seven goals as they would not trail again in the game.
  • The teams were tied at 3-3 after the opening quarter, but Plattsburgh outscored Canton 5-2 in the second stanza to take an 8-5 lead into intermission.
  • The Cardinals scored the first four goals of the second half before Canton got within five (12-7) on a pair of tallies from Goodnough and Mesler.
  • Over a four and-a-half minute span from the end of the third to start the fourth the hosts added four straight scores to put the game away up 16-7 with less than 12 minutes to play. They would ultimately prevail 21-8.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mesler led all players with six goals in the game as six of his eight shot attempts were on target and all six shots on goal found the back of the net. Goodnough tallied a goal and three assists, while Newcomb scored once and Alex Jacobs dished out an assist.
  • Donald Woods paced Plattsburgh with three goals and four assists, while John Eiseman and Cam Morin supplied four goals and one assist each.
  • Hayden Todd made 19 saves allowing 13 goals (.594 save %) over the first three quarters for the Roos and he also picked up a team-high six ground balls. Sam Servati stopped two shots surrendering eight scores in the fourth quarter.
  • Dan Clements turned aside six shots allowing eight goals in the win, while Zachary Nacheman and Jack Mulcahy split the final six minutes but neither faced a shot.
  • Plattsburgh held the upper hand in shots on goal (42-14), ground balls (54-36) and faceoffs (17-14). The Cardinals went 5-for-12 on extra-man opportunity while the Roos were 1-for-7.

The Roos have a two week layoff before they host VTSU Castleton in their home opener on March 14th.
