LaPorte Records Six Hit Day in Roos Debut as Baseball Opens Season vs. Wells

Washington, D.C. – Junior transfer John LaPorte recorded six hits in his debut in a Roo uniform as the SUNY Canton baseball team opened its 2024 season with a doubleheader on Saturday against Wells College in the nation's capital.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got on the board first in the top of the second when John LaPorte and Nick Shoemaker scored Edilberto Rosado and Mike Henry on back-to-back RBI singles.
  • Wells was quick to respond doubling up Canton with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Canton drew even with a pair of runs in the fourth. LaPorte brought home Rosado on a base hit and later scored himself on a Wells throwing error.
  • The Express regained the lead with one run in their at-bats in the fourth.
  • In an entertaining game the Roos tied things at five apiece when Mike Henry hit an inside-the-park home run in the sixth.
  • Wells took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Canton got within one in the eighth when LaPorte scored on a balk.
  • The Roos got the tying run on base in the ninth with a leadoff walk but a double play and strike out ended their comeback bid.
  • LaPorte went 3-for-4 scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs, while Shoemaker was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rosado and Henry also scored two runs each.
  • Nick Barone picked up the no-decision allowing five runs with three strike outs and five walks in four innings. Maxwell Rose took the loss allowing two unearned runs in two innings with two strike outs and three walks.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Canton opened an early lead in the third inning of the nightcap when LaPorte scored on a wild pitch.
  • Wells tied it up plating one run in the fifth and the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Express scored three times.
  • LaPorte went 3-for-4 scoring once in the nightcap, while Henry was 2-for-4.
  • Hunter LaValley took the loss for the Roos allowing one earned run with four strike outs and six walks in six innings.
  • Mason Smith was credited with the win for the Express surrendering one run in six innings with three strike outs and two walks. Zac Legaretta earned the save throwing the final inning giving up one hit with a walk and strike out.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Sunday when they square off with Albright College for a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
