Coulter & Balcom Lead Roos Against Saints

Canton, NY – Freshman Emerson Coulter scored a team-high 11 kills and added seven digs and senior Sarah Balcom recorded 10 kills and five digs, but the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team dropped their final match of the season against St. Lawrence University on Wednesday evening 3-2 (29-27, 21-25, 8-25, 25-21, 11-15).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to an impressive 8-0 lead that was capped by a Coulter kill before the Saints could get on the board.  Another four-point run put Canton up 13-5. St. Lawrence got within two on a Sofia Velasquez kill (19-17). An ace by junior Alexas Marshall got the Roos within one point of closing out the set (24-21), but the Saints scored three straight to tie the set 24-24.  The teams traded points, but consecutive kills by junior Brooke Hite and Coulter gave the Roos the set 29-27.
  • Canton sprinted out to a quick 8-2 lead before the Saints responded, scoring 11 of the next 14 points to lead 13-11.  A kill and ace by junior Sammie Frank tied the set at 14.  A 9-4 run by St. Lawrence put them ahead 23-18 and they would eventually close out the set 25-21.
  • The third set was all Saints as they moved ahead early and carried the momentum throughout the set, winning 25-8.
  • The Roos fought to stave off elimination and were up 9-5 early.  The Saints tied it at 9-9 on an Araiza Acum-Santos kill.  St. Lawrence led 15-12 but Canton scored seven of the next eight points to lead 19-16 and would eventually tie the match at 2-2 on the set winner from Erica Mumbulo making the score 25-21.
  • St. Lawrence got off to an early 9-5 lead in the final stanza before the Roos got within one on three occasions.  But the Saints scored the final three points to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • In addition to Coulter and Balcom, Hite had nine kills and four digs, senior Sarah Towles recorded a team-high 19 digs and three aces and Frank dished out 30 assists, five aces and 13 digs.  Marshall finished the night with seven kills, two aces and one block.

That concludes the 2024 season for the Roos who doubled their win total from last season under first year coach Cooper Colesante.
