Utica, NY – Five different Utica players scored as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a 5-0 non-conference loss at nationally-ranked Utica University on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers are ranked No. 8 in the latest USCHO poll and No. 9 in the latest D III Hockey News poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers scored two goals less than three minutes apart late in the first period. Jordan Kowalski scored on a loose puck with traffic out in front of Roos net minder Molly Lenihan at 14:49. Riley Calhoun and Tess Barrett were credited with assists on the play.
- Madison Richman left a drop pass for Jordan Hancock at the right circle as she wristed a shot past Lenihan at 17:28. Barrett earned her second assist of the night on the goal.
- Utica controlled shots on goal 16-5 in the first period taking a 2-0 lead to first intermission.
- The Pioneers netted three tallies in the middle period the first coming on the power play 1:17 in. The Roos looked to clear the puck after a save by Lenihan but the puck deflected off Kendall Best at the right post and into the back of the net.
- Just more than a minute later Kaci Ryder wristed a shot from the top of the left circle that was saved by Lenihan but Carly Stefanini was on the doorstep to put home the rebound for the 4-0 lead.
- The Pioneers tacked on a fifth goal when the puck deflected through traffic to the left post where Hailey Modlin scored as Madison Novotny was credited with the assist. The Roos were much more even in shots in the second period trailing by just three (15-12), but Utica led 5-0 after 40 minutes.
- Neither team found the back of the net in the third period as Canton held a slim 11-9 shots advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Utica held a 40-28 advantage in shots on goal and 30-24 edge in faceoffs in the contest.
- Utica was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Canton was 0-for-2.
- Angela Hawthorne recorded a 28 saves shutout for the Pioneers. Molly Lenihan turned aside 18 shots allowing four goals over the first 22:43 in the start, while Abby Seaman made 17 saves allowing one score in the final 37:17 in relief.

The Roos will host Buffalo State in the front end of a two-game SUNYAC set on Friday at 4 p.m.
