Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team battled toe to toe with unbeaten Buffalo State nearly tying the game with less than 20 minutes remaining but ultimately the Bengals (10-0-1) held on for a 2-0 SUNYAC win on Saturday.
THE BASICS
- Result:Â Buffalo State 2, SUNY Canton
- Location: SUNY Canton Turf – Canton, NY
- Records: Buffalo State (10-0-1, 3-0-0 SUNYAC) | SUNY Canton (3-9-1, 0-3-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just under four minutes in Tapiwa Mushonga had a great scoring chance from the top of the box off a corner kick but Christopher Guallpa made a great stop defensively in goal.
- Buffalo State got on the board in the sixth minute off a set piece. After playing the ball down to the left Aney Djadou dribbled the ball and left a drop off pass for Sam Gregson who ripped a shot off the left post and in for the early lead.
- The Bengals controlled shots on goal in the opening half 7-0 but five great first half saves from Nolan Sullivan and a defensive team save kept the Roos within one after 45 minutes.
- With 19 minutes remaining the Roos used a great transition game to nearly tie the game as Guallpa's shot from distance from the right side struck off the corner of the left post and crossbar and stayed out.
- The Roos really came alive in the second half registering four shots on goal and putting pressure on the Buffalo State defense.
- With just less than eight minutes remaining the Bengals added a crucial insurance goal as they scored off a corner from the left side as a Canton defender tried to clear the ball away from danger, but unfortunately the ball redirected off his head and found the back of the net for a Bengals goal.
- Canton continued to try and putt pressure on down the stretch but the Bengals held on for the win.
