Sullivan, Vela, Roos Defense Post Strong Performance

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team put on an outstanding defensive effort, led by a tandem of freshman goalkeepers Nolan Sullivan and Jason Vela, but dropped a 2-0 decision to SUNY New Paltz in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bryan Lizama put the Hawks on the board in the 29th minute, gathering a loose ball in the goal area and chipping it past Nolan.  Kieran Weber assisted on the goal.
  • New Paltz doubled their lead when Tim Kane's shot was deflected by a diving Nolan, off the far post and just across the goal line.  The goal was scored in the 36th minute and Colin Brant earned the assist.
  • Nolan made two key saves in the final minutes of the first half to keep the game close.
  • Both teams defended well in the second half and Vela made a number of acrobatic saves for the Roos.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • New Paltz had 12 shots on goal to the Roos five.  Michael Gavette led the Roos with two, Foster Hutchins, Owen Lebron and John Bustamante each had one.
  • Nolan finished with three first half saves and Vela made seven in the second.  Christian Michell had five saves for the Hawks.
