Strong Second and Fourth Quarters Push Women’s Hoops to NAC Win at Morrisville

Roos Set New D-III Era Wins Mark

Morrisville, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team outscored host SUNY Morrisville by 11 in the second quarter and finished the game strong to earn a 69-60 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) road win on Saturday afternoon. 

The 15 wins in a season set a new program mark for the NCAA D-III era breaking last season's mark of 14 and are the most wins (four-year school) by a SUNY Canton women's basketball team in the last 17 seasons since the 2006-07 team won 23 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts roared out to a 14-5 lead seven minutes in and led 16-9 after the opening quarter.
  • The Roos completely flipped the script in the second quarter dominating the Mustangs 25-14 in the stanza to take a 34-30 lead into intermission.
  • Moore led all players with 15 points and seven rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting in the first half. Josely Medina paced the Mustangs with 12 points.
  • Play was back-and-forth in the third quarter but the Roos closed the quarter on a 5-0 run with a three-pointer from Hope Aniceto and bucket inside from Shannyn St. Andrews to take a 49-45 lead to the fourth.
  • After a Morrisville basket to start the fourth trimmed the Canton lead to just two, the Roos rattled off a 13-2 run to take control of the game as they extended their advantage to as many as 14 on their way to the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Moore recorded game-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds shooting 9-for-15 from the field. Her 22 points were a career-best in a Canton uniform. Sierra Pabo chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, while Samantha Dayter totaled eight points and 11 rebounds. Emma Perez also scored eight points while hauling down six rebounds.
  • Brooke Hammersley paced the Mustangs with 22 points, while Medina (15) and Anyssia Ingersoll (13) scored in double figures.
  • Canton shot 43% from the field compared to a 33% mark for Morrisville. The Roos controlled rebounds (51-37), points in the paint (42-20), bench points (31-15), second chance points (15-5) and fast break points (16-10).

The women's basketball team is back in NAC action next Saturday when they visit SUNY Cobleskill at 3 p.m.
