Aniceto’s 21 Leads Women’s Basketball in Last Second Loss vs. Saints

Canton, NY – Hope Aniceto recorded a team-high 21 points, but a late fourth quarter push carried visiting St. Lawrence to a 72-70 win in an entertaining non-conference game on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the first quarter following an Aniceto three and Samantha Dayter layup. Canton led 21-18 after 10 minutes of action.
  • The hosts led by as many as seven on multiple occasions in the second quarter with St. Lawrence using a 7-0 run to tie the game at 27 apiece midway through the stanza. The Roos responded with a 7-0 run of their own and took their largest lead of the half at 36-28 after a Torie Moore jumper with 1:44 to play.
  • The Roos went to the locker room leading 36-30. Aniceto paced Canton with 13 first-half points, while Jackie Malley had 15. Canton shot over 57% from the field in the first half, while holding the Saints to 31% shooting.
  • St. Lawrence scored seven of the first nine points out of break to get within one. Canton responded opening its largest lead of the game at nine (55-46) after Moore knocked down a pair of free throws.
  • The Roos nearly extended their lead to 11 but a missed bucket inside quickly turned to a Saints three-pointer that sparked a 7-0 SLU run trimming their deficit to just two. The hosts led 57-53 after three quarters.
  • The Saints took their first lead of the half at 62-61 after a Cam Roberts jumper with 7:21 to play. The Roos quickly responded with a pair of Aniceto free throws, one from Marijke Kroon and a jumper from Sierra Pabo to extend the lead to 66-62 midway through the quarter.
  • St. Lawrence used a 10-0 run that included a pair of three balls from Malley to open a six point lead with 1:43 to play. Canton cut the lead to two with a pair of Moore free throws and Dayter jumper inside with 37 seconds left.
  • The Roos got a stop defensively with seven seconds remaining, but were unable to get off a potential game-winning three-point attempt in the final seconds as St. Lawrence held on for the two point win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Aniceto led the Roos with 21 points hitting five of her seven three-point attempts and added five rebounds. Dayter recorded 14 points and five rebounds and Moore tallied a season-high 12 points to go with eight rebounds. Pabo also reached double figures with 10 points, while Pina and Kroon tallied six and five, respectively.
  • Malley was the lone Saint in double figures with 30 points on 10-for-19 shooting including six threes. Norah Niesz posted nine points, while three Saints had six points each. Elizabeth Flynn hauled down a game-high 14 boards.
  • Most statistical categories were even as each team recorded 36 rebounds. St. Lawrence held a slim 26-17 advantage in bench points, while Canton had a slight edge in points in the paint , 28-22.
  • The Roos shot nearly 46% from the field and hit on 50% of their threes, while St. Lawrence had marks of 42% and 33%, respectively.

The women's basketball team returns to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday when they visit VTSU Johnson at 7:30 p.m.
