Roos Hold Early Lead Before Season Ends Against Geneseo in NCAA First Round

Middlebury, VT – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team held an early 3-2 lead with six minutes left in the opening quarter, but it was all SUNY Geneseo from their as the Knights earned a 22-4 win v. the Roos in an NCAA Tournament First Round game on Saturday at Middlebury College.  
 
Geneseo is receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 25 national poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Knights got on the board first less than two minutes in but the Roos were quick to respond as Dayter caged her 73rd goal of the season. The teams would exchange goals with Maddy Caron scoring off a free-position shot to knot things up at 2-2.
  • The Roos took their first lead of the game at 3-2 when Caroline Nappi fed Casey Pelton who was wide open in front of the crease as she put home her 18th goal of the season.
  • Geneseo scored the next six goals as they took an 8-3 lead after the opening quarter.
  • The Knights scored the first four goals of the second stanza to extend their consecutive goal streak to 10 straight.
  • Nappi broke up the run midway through the second quarter as she scored off a feed from Dayter after she was triple teamed. Canton's first four shots on goal in the game all found the back of the net.
  • Geneseo netted the next four goals to take a 16-4 lead into intermission.
  • The Knights would outscore the Roos 6-0 in the second half on their way to the victory.
  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Nappi and Dayter led the Canton offense with a goal and assist each, while Caron and Pelton also scored. Caron picked up a game-high seven draw controls and added a ground ball and caused turnover. Dayter added five draw controls and Olivia Scott tied a game-best with five ground balls.
  • With her 13 draw controls in the NAC championship game against Husson Caron broke the Roos single-season draw controls record and after adding seven today she now owns the record with 129 in a season.
  • Alaina Reina paced Geneseo with seven points on four goals and three assists, while Molly Brown had two goals and four assists. Reegan Vorgang and Megan Cook supplied five points each, while Emily Salanger scored four times for the Knights.
  • Scott played the first quarter plus before Erin Anderson played a majority of the second quarter. Scott would return to goal for the second half for the Roos. Scott made six saves allowing 16 goals in 46 minutes of action, while Anderson turned aside three shots surrendering six scores in 14 minutes.
  • Emily DeJohn allowed four goals in the first half without making a save in the win for the Knights. Maggie Rosaschi turned aside three shots without allowing a score in the second half.
  • Geneseo controlled shots on goal (31-7) and ground balls (26-10). Canton had the upper hand in draw controls, 15-13.

WHAT'S NEXT? 
This concludes a successful 2023 season for the Roos that saw them win their third North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship and make their third NCAA Tournament in program history.
