Softball Opens NAC Play Against Wildcats

Canton, NY – Seven different players recorded hits on the day as the Roos dropped a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) home-opening games to Cazenovia College on Saturday.  


THE BASICS 

·       Result: Game 1: Cazenovia 26, SUNY Canton 4; 5 INN. | Game 2: Cazenovia 17, SUNY Canton 4  

·       Location: SUNY Canton Softball Field – Canton, NY 

·       Records: Cazenovia (7-11, 2-0 NAC) | SUNY Canton (0-9, 0-2 NAC)

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE  

HOW IT HAPPENED

·       Cazenovia used a 12-run second inning and an eight-run third to build a 24-1 lead after three innings in the opener. 

·       Canton would tack on one run in the bottom of the third courtesy of a Priscilla Soule single that scored Emma Hayes

·       Kirsten Joslin would homer in the top of the fifth to push the Wildcat lead to 26-1. 

·       The Roos would score three more in the bottom half of the fifth off a Cazenovia error and a Caitlyn Reed two RBI single making the score 26-4.  

·       Reed led the way for Canton with two hits while Angelina LoPiccolo, Sophia Gundersen, Mackenzie Currie, Brooke Basmajian and Soule all recorded one.  

·       Olivia Simone went 4-for-4 with three doubles and seven RBI to lead Cazenovia. Morgan Marl and Kirsten Joslin both hit home runs for the Wildcats.

·       Sarah Penny earned the win on the mound allowing just three hits and one run over three innings.  

·       Reed was handed the loss for the Roos giving up 20 hits while striking out four through five innings.  

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE 

  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

·       Penny would open the scoring in the nightcap hitting a lead-off home run in the top of the first as Cazenovia would jump out to a 2-0 lead. 

·       The Roos would tie the game in the bottom of the inning as LoPiccolo would score on a wild pitch followed by Gundersen scoring on a fielding error.  

·       The Wildcats tacked on nine runs in the second and six in the third to build a 17-2 lead. 

·       Canton would cut the lead to 17-4 as another wild pitch by the Wildcats in the bottom of the third scored LoPiccolo before Gundersen crossed on a throwing error by the catcher. 

·       LoPiccolo, Gundersen and Taryn Morrissey all had hits for the Roos. 

·       Fiona Hunt hit a pair of homers for the Wildcats while Penny, Morgan Marl and Haley Geistler had one each.

·       Geistler earned the win for Cazenovia allowing just three hits while striking out nine and walking one over five innings. 

·       Abigail Sawyer took the loss going five innings surrendering 18 hits with a strike out and four walks.

WHAT'S NEXT?
These two teams will play another NAC doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m.
