Welch & Barone Combine for Three Homers and 9 RBI in NAC Win v. Caz

Canton, NY – Nathan Welch and Nick Barone combined for six hits, three home runs and drove in nine runs as the SUNY Canton baseball team earned an 11-10 win in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener for both teams on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to a quick lead with two homers and six runs in the first inning on Saturday. Welch hit a two-run shot to center scoring Nick Shoemaker and Barone cleared the bases with a grand slam scoring Dylan Allen, Alphonse Fuca and Hunter LaValley.
  • Canton added a run in the second on a Welch solo shot to right center and added two more runs in the third on a Welch 2 RBI single scoring Barone and Ty Reed.
  • Cazenovia got on the board with a solo homer in the fourth inning and Canton added another run in the bottom of the inning on a Reed RBI single to right center bringing home Fuca.
  • The Wildcats got within 10-4 with three runs in the fifth and Canton made it 11-4 when Mike Henry scored on an error in the sixth.
  • Cazenovia tacked on a run in the seventh and rallied with five runs in their final at-bats. After an error that extended the game the Wildcats scored two more unearned runs and had the tying run at first base but Anthony Bocchino was able to get a ground out to end things.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Welch went 3-for-5 with two runs, a walk and five RBI, while Barone was 3-for-4 scoring twice and driving in four runs. Shoemaker and Allen supplied three hits each, while Reed, Fuca and LaValley all had multi-hit games.
  • Cameron Ciampaglia went 3-for-3 with two home runs, two walks and four RBI for Cazenovia.
  • Gavin Neuland earned the win for the Roos striking out six batters and walking five surrendering four runs in 5.1 innings.
  • Zach Rainville took the loss allowing seven runs with two strike outs and a walk in two innings.
     
WHAT'S NEXT?
These two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. in Canton.
