LaValley Tosses Eight Innings as Roos Open Weekend Series in Pitcher’s Duel v. Tigers

Canton, NY – Hunter LaValley threw eight strong innings but visiting SUNY Cobleskill earned a 3-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win in a pitcher's duel in the opening game of a three-game weekend series.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Cobleskill 3, SUNY Canton 1
  • Location: SUNY Canton Baseball Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Cobleskill (16-11, 11-0 NAC) | SUNY Canton (9-18, 6-5 NAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers opened the scoring with a David Flora RBI single in the first inning.
  • The Roos tied things up with a Nick Shoemaker RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score Mike Henry. After a Frank Nieto single the bases were loaded with just one out but the Roos were unable to take the lead after a strike out and fielder's choice ended the inning.
  • Flora added to his damage at the plate leading off the sixth with a solo shot to left field to regain the Tiger lead. After Edilberto Rosado threw out a runner on the base path Cobleskill would tack on a second run on a Logan Firmen infield RBI single on a bang-bang play at first.
  • Canton threatened in the seventh inning with runners on second and third with no outs, however, some base running cost the Roos on a double play ball as Cobleskill was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
  • The Tigers got a leadoff single to start the eighth and had a runner in scoring position with no outs, but LaValley did a nice job working out of a jam getting a foul out, ground out and fly out to end the inning.
  • The Roos went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings as the comeback bid fell short.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Seven different players registered hits for the Roos led by a double each from Dylan Allen and Derek Maldonado and a hit and RBI from Shoemaker.
  • Flora paced the Cobleskill bats with three hits and two RBI.
  • Wyatt Palmer earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season striking out seven batters with a walk and allowed one run in the complete game effort.
  • LaValley took the loss scattering seven hits and three runs over eight innings. Nick Barone threw the final inning in relief with a strike out and sat the Tigers down in order.

WHAT'S NEXT?
These two teams will play a NAC doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Canton.
