Nieto Posts Four Hits as Vargas & Guerin Earn Wins in NAC Sweep

Canton, NY – Frank Nieto posted four hits on the day and Danny Vargas and Kayden Guerin earned wins on the mound as the SUNY Canton baseball team earned a 9-8 and 3-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) sweep v. SUNY Poly on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
 
  • The Roos opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first. Nick Barone singled up the middle bringing in Alphonse Fuca and Dylan Allen.  
  • Poly would tack on six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. 
  • A Ty Reed single would score Allen again and a Mackenzie Mather double brought in Fuca and Reed in the bottom half of the third to cut the lead to 6-5. 
  • Two more Wildcat runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings pushed the lead back to 8-5. 
  • The Roos would score one more in the bottom of the sixth off a double by Frank Nieto that scored Nick Shoemaker.
  • After a quick top half of the seventh Canton would load the bases with one out following a walk, single and hit by pitch. Shoemaker would single to shallow right to make the score 8-7 before a walk off ground-rule double by Nieto would score Reed and Ian Gacek
  • Danny Vargas earned the win on the mound allowing just five hits while striking out two over four innings.
  • Daniel DeBruin was handed the loss for the Wildcats facing just one batter in the bottom of the seventh. 
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • SUNY Poly scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to get off to an early lead.
  • The Roos responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third. Alphonse Fuca singled home Nieto and Nathan Welch and Dylan Allen scored on a wild pitch.  
  • Fuca led the Roos with two hits and two RBI, while Nieto and Edilberto Rosado had one each. 
  • Kayden Guerin earned the win for the Roos giving up two unearned runs with four strike outs in a complete game effort. Michael Johnson took the loss giving up three runs with four strike outs and five walks in four innings. 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Friday when they host SUNY Cobleskill for a single nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
