Fuca’s Four Hits Leads Baseball to Split v. Hamilton

Clinton, NY – Alphonse Fuca had a four hit day to lead the SUNY Canton baseball team to a split in a doubleheader at Hamilton College on Friday afternoon.

The Roos won the opener 4-3 before the Continentals bounced back for a 13-3 win in the nightcap. Hamilton went all the way to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship game a season ago.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Hamilton got on the board first with one run each in the first and second innings.
  • Canton evened things up with two runs in the fifth. Ty Reed got things started with a one out triple and Nick Shoemaker walked. Edilberto Rosado brought home Reed on an RBI ground out and Nathan Welch singled home Shoemaker.
  • After a scoreless sixth inning the Roos took the lead with two runs in the top half of the seventh. Shoemaker drew a leadoff walk and Rosado laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to move Shoemaker into scoring position. With first base open the Continentals intentionally walked Welch. The runners each moved up a base on a wild pitch and Dylan Allen brought home Shoemaker on an RBI single down the right field line. With two outs Fuca provided a crucial insurance run scoring Welch on a single up the middle. After a hit by pitch the Roos left the bases loaded heading to the bottom half of the inning.
  • On the mound Hunter LaValley got a fly out to start the bottom of the seventh, but Hamilton had a runner reach base on an error and got the tying run on base following a walk. A single loaded the bases with one out, but the Roos got the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice as one run scored. With a pair of runners in scoring position Kayden Guerin was able to get the Continentals to ground out to third to seal the win.
  • Fuca led the Roos with two hits, while Welch and Allen had a hit and RBI each.
  • Taylor Kaufman paced Hamilton with three hits, while Jay Schlaefer had two.
  • Gavin Neuland earned the no-decision for the Roos giving up two runs with a strike out and four walks in five innings. LaValley picked up the win tossing 1.1 innings giving up one unearned run with a walk. Guerin was credited with the save tossing the final 0.2 innings.
  • Henry Boehm took the loss for Hamilton giving up one run without recording an out in the seventh.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got on the board first scoring once in the top of the first in the nightcap. Welch doubled with two outs and Allen reached on an error before Welch scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Continentals responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame and added a five spot in the third, a run in the fifthc and four more in the sixth.
  • Canton tacked on a pair of runs in their final at-bats in the seventh on a LaValley double that scored Reed and a Derek Maldonado fielder's choice which plated LaValley.
  • Fuca and Welch led the Roos with two hits each, while Reed, LaValley and Brendan Finnegan had one hit apiece.
  • Lucas led the Continental bats with a 3-for-3 performance, while Greg Kopp, Jackson Sattinger, Ethan Harrast and Michael Tallarida all had two hits and two RBI each.
  • Aidan Regan earned the win for Hamilton tossing five innings without giving up an earned run and struck out seven batters while walking two.
  • Morgan De La Garza took the loss for Canton allowing six earned with a pair of walks in two innings.

The Roos are back in action on Tuesday when they visit SUNY Oneonta for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
