Baseball Earns Walk-Off Win in Extras v. Knox to Earn Split on Tuesday

Davenport, FL – The SUNY Canton baseball team earned its second walk-off win in three days as it defeated Knox College 4-3 in 10 innings in the nightcap on Tuesday. The Roos fell 14-2 in seven innings to Mount St. Joseph University in their opening game of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Beloit jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer in the first inning of Tuesday's opener and added two runs on a 2 RBI double in the fourth inning.
  • The Roos brought two runs across in the fifth inning. Mackenzie Mather drew a leadoff walk, Brendan Finnegan singled, Mather scored on a passed ball and Nick Shoemaker drove in Finnegan on an RBI single.
  • Leading 5-2 the Buccaneers took control of the game with six runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
  • The game would end after seven innings as the Russ Matt Tournament employs a 10-run mercy rule (after seven innings) for nine inning games where there is a game immediately following on the same field.
  • Shoemaker continued his strong play in Florida going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Finnegan had the other hit and scored once.
  • Connor Vogel led Beloit going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three runs and 6 RBI.
  • Morgan De La Garza took the loss on the mound allowing eight runs on six hits with six walks and five strike outs in 5.2 innings.
  • Thomas Kosakowski picked up the win for the Buccaneers throwing a complete game surrendering two earned runs on three hits with a walk and eight strike outs.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Nathan Welch got the Roos off to an early lead hitting a solo homer to right field in the fourth inning. It was the second dinger of the young season for the senior.
  • With two outs in the fifth the Roos scored a pair of unearned runs following a Knox miscue. Shoemaker reached on an error that scored Frank Nieto from second. Edilberto Rosado followed with a two out RBI single to score Shoemaker.
  • The Prarie Fire got two back in the sixth scoring on an error and an RBI single. Knox would knot things up at three on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning as the teams headed to extras.
  • Evan Ruddy came on to toss the 10th and struck out the first two batters. After giving up a double he was able to induce a fly out to center to end the inning.
  • In the bottom half of the inning Derek Maldonado came through with a one out pinch hit single up the middle. Mike Henry pinch ran for him and scored following a Shoemaker single and Knox error for the walk-off win.
  • Welch led the Roos going 2-for-4 with a home run and RBI, while Rosado had a hit and drove in a run.
  • Hunter LaValley earned the no-decision on the mound tossing nine innings allowing three runs with seven strike outs and two walks. Ruddy picked up the win tossing the final inning with two strike outs.
  • Brady Bertrand was credited with the loss for Knox tossing 2.1 innings allowing one unearned run with two strike outs.

The Roos are off on Wednesday before returning to the diamond on Thursday when they take on Fredonia at 9:30 a.m. in Auburndale, FL.
