Baseball Opens Season Against RIT & Gallaudet

Washington, D.C. – The SUNY Canton baseball team opened its 2023 season on Saturday in the nation's capital. The Roos opener against RIT was suspended in the fourth inning and will be resumed on Sunday, while they fell 15-1 to host Gallaudet in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – SUSP. B-4 | BOX SCORE
  • RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Saturday's opener with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Roos responded with a single run when Edilberto Rosado scored on a passed ball in the top of the second.
  • Canton added two more runs in the third. Frank Nieto scored on a balk before Nathan Welch scored on a throwing error.
  • The game was suspended due to heavy snow and low visibility after Canton's at-bats in the fourth inning with the Roos leading 3-1.
  • Saturday's game between Canton and RIT will be resumed at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Bison jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap scoring twice in the first and third innings.
  • The hosts put up five spots in both the sixth and seventh innings to blow open a 14-0 lead heading to the eighth.
  • Canton got on the board in the eighth on a Derek Maldonado RBI double to score Alphonse Fuca. It was the first career hit and RBI for the rookie.
  • Gallaudet tacked on another run in the eighth for the 15-1 final.
  • Maldonado, Fuca, Hunter LaValley and Dylan Allen all recorded doubles for the Roos.
  • Gavin Neuland took the loss allowing four earned runs with two strike outs and three walks in five innings.
  • Johnathan Guerrero picked up the win for the Bison tossing six innings allowing three hits and no runs with five strike outs and three walks.
  • Brandon Washington led the hosts with four hits, while Salvador Diaz and Joshua Dugan provided three hits each and combined to drive in seven runs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Sunday when they finish off their game with RIT at 9 a.m. before squaring off with Washington College (MD) at approximately 11 a.m. at Hoy Field in Washington, D.C.
