Dominant Third Quarter Lifts Roos Past Bears

Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team outscored host SUNY Potsdam by 12 in the third quarter to lead the Roos to a 64-57 non-conference win against the Bears on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team led by more than four points in most of the opening quarter until a late jumper from Jenna Cotter gave the Bears a 14-8 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • Potsdam opened the first 4:36 of the second quarter on an 11-6 run to take their largest lead of the game at 25-14. Canton went on a 12-4 run to get within three before a last second bucket gave the hosts a 31-26 lead at intermission.
  • Samantha Dayter and Sierra Pabo led the Roos with eight and seven points, respectively, in the first half. Cotter and Jakia Howard had 11 and 10 each for the Bears.   
  • The Roos used their strong finish to the second quarter to carry momentum to the third in what proved to be the difference. Canton held their largest lead of the game at nine on multiple occasions in the stanza. They entered the third quarter trailing by five and left the frame with a seven point lead.
  • The Bears got within two early in the fourth quarter after an Xy'el Bradford layup, but Canton quickly responded with a 6-0 run to open an eight point margin. Potsdam knocked down a three on the ensuing possession but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Pabo tied a game-high with 20 points shooting 7-for-16 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line. Hope Aniceto tallied 17 points, six rebounds and five assists. Dayter notched 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. She picked up her fourth foul with 3:41 left in the third quarter, but was able to play the final 6:33 of the game without picking up her fifth. Torie Moore hauled down a team-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
  • Howard paced Potsdam with a double-double of 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Cotter recorded a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds with four blocks. Bradford also scored in double figures with 13 points for the Bears.
  • Canton shot the ball slightly better than Potsdam finishing with marks of 36.5% from the field and 34.8% from three compared to the Bears hitting 34.4% and 25%, respectively.
  • The Roos had one more rebound than Potsdam (44-43) and three less turnovers (9-12). Canton had the edge in fast break points (17-4), bench points (7-2) and points off turnovers (9-5), while the Bears had slim advantages in second chance points (14-8) and points in the paint (30-24).  
  • This is just the second win for the Roos v. the Bears in the D-III era and the first since November 22nd, 2015 when the Roos won 66-54.

The women's basketball team returns to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday when they host SUNY Cobleskill at 7:30 p.m.
