Paswaters Nets First Collegiate Goal in SUNYAC Opener at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Isabella Paswaters recorded her first collegiate goal, but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a tight 2-1 battle at SUNY Potsdam in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Potsdam 2, SUNY Canton 1
  • Location: Maxcy Ice Arena – Potsdam, NY
  • Records: SUNY Potsdam (2-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) | SUNY Canton (2-1, 0-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got on the board first at 18:25 of the opening period. Jordan Caroccio started the breakout from Canton's defensive zone flipping the puck up through the neutral zone as Kyra O'Keefe deflected the puck into the Roos offensive zone. Paswaters collected the puck below the right dot and fired the puck toward net as it redirected off a skate into the back of the net.
  • Canton held a 9-6 shots advantage and 1-0 lead on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play.
  • The Bears knotted thing at one apiece following a tough line change for the Roos. Kaylee Merrill, the defending conference player of the year, was given space on a breakout as she ripped a shot high glove side just under the bar. Megan Teachout and Megan Mills were credited with assists on the play.
  • Potsdam controlled shots 10-4 in the second as things were knotted at one after two periods.
  • The hosts would find the ultimate game-winner just 19 seconds into the third. Alessia Marandola's initial shot from the slot was saved by Roos net minder Molly Lenihan but Marandola buried her own rebound for the 2-1 lead.
  • The Roos would muster seven shots in the third period but were unable to find the equalizer as Potsdam eeked out the league win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Face offs were even at 26 apiece in the game, while the Bears held a slim 22-20 edge in shots.
  • Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
  • Magalie Parent turned aside 19 shots in the win for the Bears, while Lenihan made 20 stops in defeat.
