Couture and Lenihan Lead Roos Against Cortland

Canton, NY – Sophomore Tilly Couture and freshman Molly Lenihan both had strong outings for the SUNY Canton women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon, but the Roos dropped a 3-1 decision to SUNY Cortland in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Cortland scored the lone goal of the first period at 10:43 when Kait Bourgeois wristed a shot through a screen and past Lenihan.  It was a powerplay goal and the third for Bourgeois this season.
  • Lenihan came up big in the second period, making 15 saves, including a huge breakaway stop early in the period.  The Red Dragons were able to capitalize at 2:40, when Elena Eichmann deflected a shot as she fell in front of the net, putting the puck over Lenihan's left shoulder.
  • The Roos closed the gap at 5:04 of the third period, as Couture banged home a rebound past a sprawled-out Molly Goergen, making the game 2-1 Cortland.  Sophomore Jayme McIlveen and senior Kamryn Barnes earned the assists.
  • Alex Johnson scored the insurance goal for the Red Dragons at 12:58 of the third to close out the scoring on the night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Shots on goal were almost even, with the Red Dragons holding a 32-31 advantage.  Couture led the Roos with eight.
  • The Roos won 17 of 47 faceoffs, led by senior Iida Laitinen who won 10.
  • Canton's power play was 1/2, Cortland was 1/3.
  • Lenihan made 29 saves, Goergen made 30.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos host a pair of non-conference games against Anna Maria College on Friday, November 17th and Saturday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
