Aniceto & Culkin Reach Double Figures as Strong Fourth Quarter Carries Poly to Win

Canton, NY – Hope Aniceto and Joie Culkin reached double figures, but the SUNY Canton women's basketball team fell 58-54 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game v. SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team led by more than four in the opening 10 minutes as the teams were tied at 11 apiece after the first quarter.
  • Poly used a 10-4 run to open up their largest lead of the half at 26-19 with 2:55 to play. The Roos closed the half on a 9-5 run to get within 31-28 at intermission. Jayda Pina led the Roos with eight points in the opening half, while Kelsey Meca had nine for the Wildcats.
  • Canton outscored Poly 14-9 in the third quarter to take a 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Play was extremely close in the final quarter with the Roos trailing with three after a pair of Aniceto free throws with 1:28 remaining. However, those were the final points for the Roos as Poly was able to hang on splitting a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Aniceto led the Roos with 14 points adding five rebounds and four steals. Culkin recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Pina tallied nine points and Samantha Dayter dished out six assists with Emma Perez recording nine rebounds and four assists to go with five points.
  • Molly Burdick posted a double-double for the Wildcats as Lyrik Jackson (15), Meca (12) and Lauren Denny (11) all scored in double figures.
  • The Roos held advantages in fast break points (12-2), points in the paint (24-18) and bench points (10-3).

The women's basketball team is back in action on Friday when they host Bryant & Stratton Albany at 4:30 p.m.
