Culkin Nets Career-High 28 in NAC Road Win at Johnson

Johnson, VT – Senior Joie Culkin netted a career-high 28 points leading the SUNY Canton women's basketball team to an 82-74 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) road win at NVU-Johnson on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the hosts got out to a 14-11 lead midway through the opening quarter the Roos closed the stanza on a 12-4 run to take a 23-18 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • Canton extended its lead to as many as nine in the second quarter and took a 44-35 lead into intermission.
  • The Roos lead would balloon to as many as 12 early in the third quarter before the Badgers trimmed the deficit to four with 2:03 left in the third. Canton ended the period on a 6-0 run to take a 66-56 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Canton scored the first eight points of the fourth frame to blow open an 18-point lead.
  • Johnson responded with a 10-0 run and eventually cut the lead to just five with 2:02 remaining in the game.
  • The Roos held the hosts scoreless for nearly a two-minute stretch going on a 6-0 run before a late Badger three with the game out of reach.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Culkin led all players with 28 points and added six rebounds, three steals and two assists shooting 12-for-22 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line. Her 28 points were a career-high breaking her previous mark of 26 against NVU-Lyndon during her freshman season (2/15/20).  
  • Hope Aniceto tallied 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Emma Perez recorded 10 points and six rebounds, while Jayda Pina posted 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Emily Shook chipped in nine points and six rebounds off the bench, while Samantha Dayter had seven points and six boards.
  • Emma Buonanno (25 points, 10 rebounds) and Gabrielle Wardwell (18 points, 21 rebounds) recorded double-doubles for the Badgers, while Hattie Moriatry (17) registered double figure points.
  • Canton shot 46.5% from the field and 40% from three-point range, while Johnson had marks of 39.5% and 14.3%, respectively.
  • The Roos controlled fast break points (24-8) and bench points (14-2), while the Badgers had the upper hand in second chance points (25-9).

The women's basketball team is back in action on Friday when they host Cazenovia at 5:30 p.m.
