McIlveen Scores, Roos Drop NEWHL Game at SUNY Morrisville

Morrisville, NY – Freshman Jayme McIlveen gave the SUNY Canton women's hockey team an early lead, but SUNY Morrisville's Maggie Jones made 52 saves, including 22 in the third period, to lead the Mustangs to a 5-1 win in a key Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McIlveen put the Roos on top 1-0 at 7:55 of the first period when she put the puck between a defender's legs and backhanded a shot past goaltender Maggie Jones.
  • Rhys Brown evened the game 1-1 at 15:27 of the period, snapping a wrister past senior Sirena Alvarez.
  • The Mustangs jumped ahead 2-1 when Allie Davidson banged home a rebound at 17:32 of the period.
  • Brown scored the only goal of the second period at 17:54 to put the Mustangs up 3-1.
  • Despite the Roos dominance in third period shots, it was SUNY Morrisville who put two goals on the board.  Alana McDonald scored at 6:06 of the third and Hailee Easson added another less that a minute later, extending the lead to 5-1.
  • Junior Iida Laitinen was able to finally break through with a goal at 19:44 of the third but it was not enough as the Roos fell by a final score of 5-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • McIlveen finished the game with a goal and an assist, Laitinen had a goal and five shots and Couture finished with nine shots and one assist.
  • SUNY Canton had an advantage in shots on goal 54-30 and face offs 36-30.
  • The Roos were 0/4 on the power play and 2/2 on the penalty kill.
  • Alvarez made 25 saves for the Roos in the loss.
