THE BASICS
- Result: SUNY Canton 8, SUNY Cobleskill 0
- Location: SUNY Canton Turf – Canton, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (2-4-0, 1-0-0 NAC) | SUNY Cobleskill (0-5-1, 0-1-0 NAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The hosts wasted no time getting on the board just 2 minutes, 46 seconds in when Nunez played a beautiful pass in to Harmer on the breakaway. Harmer's shot beat Cobleskill keeper Saro Karageozian just inside the left post.
- Canton struck again less than two minutes later when Martin Torales played a pass to Nunez 25 yards out. He fed Harmer to his right who delivered a one touch cross to Gavette at the far post who redirected a header for his first collegiate goal.
- The Roos, who outshot the Tigers 16-1 in the first half, had plenty more scoring opportunities and that paid off in the 23rd minute when Torales beat the keeper for the first time this season. Harmer crossed the ball into the box where it was misplayed by a Tiger defender. Torales picked up the loose ball and rifled a left-footed shot into the top left corner for the 3-0 lead.
- Roughly six minutes later Canton made it 4-0 on Gavette's second tally of the game on an eerily similar situation to his first goal. Nunez delivered a pass to the right corner for Harmer who crossed to the far post where Gavette headed home his second goal.
- The Roos held a 6-0 shots on goal advantage and 4-0 lead on the scoreboard after 45 minutes.
- Canton continued the momentum out of break as less than five minutes out of half Gavette struck again for the hat trick. Owen Lebron beat a defender to the end line playing a quick cross to Gavette who one-timed a shot inside the far post.
- The rookie from Margaretville, NY capped his four-goal outing in the 53rd minute. Owen Kwong punted a beautiful ball three-quarters of the field that was flicked on by Nunez to put Gavette in on the break. His initial shot was saved marvelously by Karageozian but Gavette cut back his shot against two defenders to put it in the right corner of net.
- Canton made it 7-0 in the 61st minute when Eric Randall played a beautiful ball up to Nunez who left a pass to Dylan Vanderpool on his left. Vanderpool struck a one-time shot into the left corner of goal for his first collegiate goal.
- Nunez netted his first of the day and third of the season to conclude the scoring in the 65th minute. Chris Cook played a ball up field as Nunez volleyed a long shot past a charging Karageozian.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Roos held the upper hand in shots (28-5), shots on goal (12-2) and corner kicks (9-2).
- Gavette led the Roos with four goals, Nunez tallied a goal and four assists and Harmer finished with a goal and two assists. Torales and Vanderpool also scored, while Lebron, Cook and Randall recorded an assist.
- Owen Kwong made two saves in the win, while Ronald Zavala did not face a shot on goal over the final 14:55.
- Karageozian made three stops allowing eight goals in the loss, while John Espinoza made one save over the final 19:31.
- The four goals for Gavette was just one short of the Roos single-game goals record and the most in nearly eight years. Nick Escalante '16 had five goals in a 5-0 win at Berkeley College (NY) on October 4, 2014.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action when they visit Russell Sage in non-conference action on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
