Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team made a late push trying to get within a goal, but visiting Clarkson tacked on a late score to earn a 3-0 win in a non-conference match on Wednesday.
THE BASICS
- Result: (RV) Clarkson 3, SUNY Canton 0
- Location: SUNY Canton Turf – Canton, NY
- Records: Clarkson (5-0) | SUNY Canton (1-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Clarkson got on the board first on an impressive individual effort from Bobby Guilfoil as he took on and beat a pair of Canton defenders with some nifty moves. He ripped a left-footed shot in the top right corner past a diving Owen Kwong.
- The Knights doubled their lead in the 35th minute off a set piece. After a Roo defender committed a foul just outside the left edge of the box Nolan Grady took a free kick and found a cutting Paolo Martino at the far post for the score.
- Clarkson held 7-3 shots and 4-0 shots on goal advantages taking a 2-0 lead into intermission.
- The Roos had some great chances in the second half with three consecutive corner kicks 12 minutes into the second stanza. Brennan Harmer had a header go just wide right.
- Canton had another quality chance with 16 minutes remaining. Connor Kelley's strike from the top of the box was saved and the rebound went right to Harmer alone out in front, but he was whistled for offsides.
- The Knights tacked on a late goal when Kwong made a tremendous save from point blank range on a shot by Chris Paucar, but Colin Wright put home the rebound for the 3-0 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Clarkson held the upper hand in shots (11-6) and shots on goal (7-2), while the Roos had a slim edge in corner kicks (4-3).
- Wright led the Knights with two shots on goal, while Kelley and Agustin Nunez had one each for Canton.
- Carter Kladstrup made two saves in the shutout for the Knights, while Kwong made four stops for Canton.
- Clarkson, who is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, is yet to allow a goal in 2022 through five games and 450 minutes of action. The five games straight for the Knights holding opponents scoreless to start a season set a program record.
