Nieto & Mather Homer as Baseball Falls at St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – Frank Nieto and Mackenzie Mather both hit their first collegiate home runs but a fast start lifted St. Lawrence past the SUNY Canton baseball team 22-6 in a non-conference game on Thursday at Tom Fay Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The St. Lawrence bats got off to a quick start with a grand slam and eight runs on three hits and four errors in the opening inning.
  • The Saints scored at least one run in each of the first six innings with one in the second, two in the third and sixth innings and three each in the fourth and fifth.
  • The Roos got on the board with three runs in the third. Nieto hit his first career long ball with a two-run shot to left center and Noah Reyes followed with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • The Saints added three runs in the eighth before the Roos responded with three in the bottom of the inning. Kevin Kapfer led off with a single and Anthony Bocchino drew a walk before Mather hit a three-run bomb to left field.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mather went 2-for-3 with a run and 3 RBI, while Nieto drove in two runs with a walk. Reyes, Kapfer, Nick Shoemaker, Jesus Garcia and Juan Diaz had one hit each with Reyes driving in a run.
  • Jimmy Liberatore led the Saints going 2-for-3 with two runs, a home run and 4 RBI. Brian Comerford went 2-for-2 with a walk, three runs and 3 RBI, while Ryan and Drew Courtwright drove in two runs each.
  • Dylan Barber earned the win in the abbreviated start in no-conference action as the Saints used four pitchers. He threw three innings without allowing a run giving up just three hits with three strike outs.
  • Michael Sandarr took the loss allowing eight earned runs with four walks and a strike out in three innings.

The Roos are back in NAC action when they host SUNY Cobleskill for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m.
