LoPiccolo Records Two Hits as Roos Drop Two at Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – Angelina LoPiccolo went 2-for-4 in the opener but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Clarkson University by scores of 4-3 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos struck first in the opener when Mackenzie Currie reached on an error allowing LoPiccolo to score from third.
  • Clarkson answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a Sarah Vaccaro two run homer to left.
  • The Golden Knights extended the lead to 3-1 on an Olivia Zoeller RBI single in the second.
  • Alexandria Mikula got the Roos within one when she reached on an error plating Kayla Chavarri.
  • Clarkson added a crucial insurance run in the fifth on a Zoey Kovach RBI ground out.
  • Trailing 4-2 heading into their final at-bats Mikula led off with a bunt single and Selena Tasli drew a walk. The runners both moved into scoring position with no outs after a wild pitch. After a pop out Mikula scored on a Madison Austin ground out and the game ended with a ground out to short.
  • LoPiccolo led the Roos with two hits, while Austin, Currie, Chavarri, Mikula and Sophia Harris all had hits.
  • Devin Fitzpatrick earned the win on the mound tossing five innings allowing no earned runs with five strike outs. Riley Page picked up the win tossing the final two innings allowing one run with two strike outs and a walk.
  • Kayla Chavarri took the loss throwing six innings surrendering three earned runs with six strike outs and two walks.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Clarkson's Zoeller and Emily McBath combined to toss a no-hitter in the nightcap. Zoeller threw four innings in the start with five strike outs and a walk. McBath threw the final inning with a strike out.
  • The Knights scored three runs in the first, four in the second and one in the third en route to the run-rule win.
  • Zoeller helped her own cause going 3-for-3 with three runs, while Vaccaro and Tatum Morris had two hits each and drove in six runs.
  • Alaina Beane took the loss allowing seven earned runs with two strike outs and three walks.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The softball team is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they host SUNY Potsdam in their home-opening doubleheader at 3 p.m.
