Miner Homers, Kapfer Drives in Three as Baseball Drops Doubleheader v. Cardinals

Plattsburgh, NY – Zach Miner hit his first home run of the season in the opener and Kevin Kapfer drove in three runs in the nightcap but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped a pair of games 23-5 and 4- 3 to host Plattsburgh State on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got on the board first when Miner hit a solo shot to right field in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals responded with six runs in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Canton bats tallied three runs in the fifth to get within two. Don Louis Rodriguez singled home Noah Reyes, Nathan Welch plated Dyllon Bougor on a single and Rodriguez scored after Alphonse Fuca singled.
  • Plattsburgh exploded for nine runs in the fifth and added three in the sixth, four in the seventh, and one in the eighth en route to a convincing win.
  • Canton would tack on one more run on a Miner sacrifice fly in the eighth.
  • Fuca and Reyes led the Roos with two hits each, while Miner drove in a pair of runs.
  • Peter Gregory picked up the win for the Cards throwing five innings allowing three earned runs with nine strike outs and a walk.
  • Steve Messerschmitt and Conner Gonzalski had three hits and 3 RBI each for the hosts.
  • Jackson Troiano took the loss for Canton surrendering six runs all of which were unearned with three strike outs in 3.2 innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Plattsburgh jumped out to a 2-0 lead with one run each in the third and fourth innings.
  • Kevin Kapfer drew the Roos even in the fifth when he scored Rodriguez and Miner on a 2 RBI single to left.
  • The Cardinals regained the lead with one run in the sixth.
  • Canton answered once again when Kapfer produced another run scoring Reyes on an RBI base hit to left.
  • The Roos walked three batters in the bottom of the seventh including the winning run as the Cardinals earned the walk-off win.
  • Chris Santic picked up the win for the hosts throwing 0.2 innings with one strike out.
  • Ty Reed was credited with the loss walking the final two batters of the game.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The baseball team continues non-conference action on Wednesday when it visits St. Lawrence at 4 p.m.
