Welch Post Three Hits & Bocchino Has Strong Outing as Baseball Closes out Weekend Set v. Poly

Canton, NY – Nathan Welch led the SUNY Canton bats with three hits on the day and Anthony Bocchino threw four innings without allowing an earned run, but visiting SUNY Poly earned a 9-5 win in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) nine-inning game on Saturday at Tom Fay Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each team scored once in the opening inning. Bougor led off with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Roos took the lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Welch led off with a double and Zach Miner drove him in on a single up the middle.
  • Poly added three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth with Canton bringing a run across in the fifth on a Bougor single up the middle to score Frank Nieto. The Wildcats led 8-3 after five-and-a half innings.
  • Canton got two back in the bottom of the sixth. Don Louis Rodriguez brought home Miner on an RBI single and Nieto doubled home Rodriguez.
  • The Wildcats would tack on a run in the eighth for the 9-5 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Welch went 3-for-4 to lead the Roos scoring once. Bougor, Reyes and Nieto all had two hits each. Bougor, Nieto, Miner and Rodriguez drove in one run each.
  • Jake Montrose went 4-for-5 and Don Vento went 3-for-5 for Poly.
  • Paul Morgan picked up the win throwing a complete game allowing just three earned runs with four strike outs.
  • Nick Shoemaker took the loss for Canton allowing four earned runs with three walks and two strike outs in five innings. Bocchino was extremely effective in relief getting three straight outs in a sixth inning jam and tossing four innings allowing just one unearned run with four strike outs.

These two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader on Tuesday at SUNY Poly at 2 p.m.
