Gibson’s Shutout, Neuland’s Strong Outing Leads Baseball to Friday Sweep of SUNY Poly

Canton, NY – Kieran Gibson tossed a seven-inning shutout and Gavin Neuland threw a complete game allowing just a single earned run as the SUNY Canton baseball team swept visiting SUNY Poly by scores of 6-0 and 10-2 on Friday at Tom Fay Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got on the board first with one run each in the first two innings of the opener. Nathan Welch scored Dyllon Bougor on an RBI fielder's choice in the first and Don Louis Rodriguez singled home Zach Miner in the second.
  • The SUNY Canton bats stayed hot in the fourth inning as Welch and Dylan Allen led off with back-to-back singles. Miner drew a walk to load the bases and with one out Seth Gilbert laced a 2 RBI base hit to right center scoring Allen and Miner. Frank Nieto reached base on a bunt single and Rodriguez and Gilbert scored on back-to-back wild pitches.
  • Gibson allowed just four base runners over the final three innings to secure the complete game shutout for the Roos.
  • Gibson earned his third win of the season throwing the complete game shutout scattering seven hits over seven innings with two walks and a strike out.
  • Ryan Secor took the loss for Poly giving up five earned runs with two walks, two strike outs and seven hits in five innings.
  • Miner led the Roos going 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Gilbert, Welch and Rodriguez had one hit each combining to drive in four runs.
  • Don Vento and Bradley Dietz led the Wildcats with two hits each.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • After a pair of scoreless innings in the nightcap, the Roos blew things open with three runs in the third and four more in the fourth.
  • Frank Nieto scored on a wild pitch and Welch followed with a two-run homer to right field in the third inning.
  • Bougor singled up the middle to bring home Kevin Kapfer and Rodriguez. The Roos executed a double steal and Nieto scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The scoring concluded in the inning when Bougor crossed home after a passed ball.
  • Poly scored one run each in the fourth and fifth inning, but Canton tacked on another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
  • Nieto singled through the right side to score Allen in the fifth and Welch continued his strong day at the plate lacing a 2 RBI double down the right field line to score Noah Reyes and Fuca.
  • Neuland threw a complete game to earn his second win of the season. He allowed just a single earned run with a strike out and walk in seven innings of work.
  • Aaron Kifer took the loss for the Wildcats throwing four innings allowing three earned runs with two walks.
  • Welch went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and 4 RBI, while Fuca was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs. Reyes was 2-for-4 and Bougor had a hit and 2 RBI. Nieto went 1-for-2 with a run, a walk and a sacrifice.
  • Vento led Poly going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
