Welch Drives in Four in Opener, Neuland Tosses Complete Game in Win

Cortland, NY – Nathan Welch went a perfect 4-for-4 and drove in four runs in the opener and Gavin Neuland earned a complete game win as the SUNY Canton baseball team split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader against Cazenovia College on Monday in Cortland.

The Roos took the opener 13-4 in seven innings before falling 5-4 in the nightcap, also in seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos jumped out to an early lead in the opener with a five-run second inning. Welch got things started doubling home Don Louis Rodriguez. Ty Reed followed with an RBI double to bring home Welch. Dyllon Bougor added to the scoring with an RBI single plating Reed. Zach Miner reached on an error with two outs to bring across Bougor.
  • Cazenovia got within two scoring three runs in the third inning.
  • Canton finished the game strong adding eight runs over the final three innings. Welch singled home Dylan Allen in the fifth. Allen brought across Bougor on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Welch followed with a two out 2 RBI base hit to score Frank Nieto and Alphonse Fuca.
  • The Roos added four more runs in their final at-bats in the seventh. Bougor singled home Reed, Fuca plated Bougor on an RBI single, and Allen brought two more runs across in Reyes and Fuca after reaching on an error.
  • Welch was 4-for-4 with a double, one run and 4 RBI. Reyes finished 3-for-5 with two runs and Bougor was 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs and 2 RBI. Allen and Reed had two hits and 1 RBI each with Reed and Fuca scoring twice.
  • Anthony Cretella led Cazenovia with three hits, while Cameron Ciampaglia had a pair of hits and 3 RBI.
  • Neuland got the start for the Roos throwing a complete game with six strike outs and three walks. He scattered eight hits and four runs over seven innings for his first win of the season.
  • Parker Wing took the loss allowing three earned runs with four strike outs and a walk in three innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Cazenovia got out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap with two runs each in the first and second innings.
  • The Roos responded with a pair of runs in the third on a Bougor RBI double and a Reyes RBI single. Canton got within one after Kevin Kapfer singled home Fuca in the fourth.
  • Cazenovia added what proved to be a crucial insurance run in the fifth.
  • Canton would tack on a fourth run in the sixth when Kapfer grounded out to bring home Fuca. The tying run was on third in the sixth with two outs but a strike out ended the inning.
  • The Roos would go down in order in the seventh as the Wildcats squeaked out a one run win.
  • Reyes went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Kapfer drove in two runs and Bougor had the other RBI for Canton.
  • Joe Brisson and Nick Santoro had two hits and one RBI each for the Wildcats.
  • Joe DeGroot earned the win for Cazenovia surrendering three earned runs with six strike outs and a walk in seven innings.
  • Jackson Troiano took the loss giving up just three earned runs over six innings with six strike outs and a walk.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The baseball team takes on Cazenovia for another NAC doubleheader on Tuesday in Canton. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 12 p.m.
