Miner Leads Baseball Past Gallaudet, 9-8

Auburndale, FL – Zach Miner threw seven innings to earn the win and recorded a pair of doubles at the plate to lead the SUNY Canton baseball team to a 9-8 win v. Gallaudet University on their third day of the Russ Matt Tournament on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got on the board first in the opening inning when Seth Gilbert used patience to draw a walk scoring Dyllon Bougor. Three different players had hits in the first as Bougor registered a leadoff double, Noah Reyes followed with a single and stole second and Nathan Welch singled to load the bases.
  • Canton added four runs in the fifth as Miner doubled home Bougor, Kevin Kapfer used a base hit to plate Reyes and Nick Shoemaker followed with a 2 RBI double to score Miner and Kapfer.
  • The Roos would tack on one run each in the sixth and seventh innings along with two in the eighth. Bougor scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and Kapfer brought home Miner on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
  • Shoemaker raced home on a wild pitch in the eighth before Frank Nieto brought Juan Diaz home on an RBI single.
  • Canton led by as many as 9-2 after their at-bats in the top half of the eighth but the Bison threatened with three runs each in the eighth and ninth innings. Gallaudet would see the tying run reach second with two outs but the Roos held on for the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Miner earned the win on the mound tossing seven innings with seven strike outs and six walks while allowing two runs. He also had a pair of doubles scoring twice and driving in a run at the plate.
  • Shoemaker finished with a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Kapfer had a hit with 2 RBI. Bougor recorded two hits and scored three times.
  • Darren Drolsbaugh led the Biosn with three hits, while Frank Diaz had two. Joshua Dugan took the loss on the mound allowing two earned runs with four strike outs and three walks in five innings.
     
WHAT'S NEXT?
The baseball team is back in action on Thursday when it squares off with Curry College at Lake Myrtle Field 4 at 9:30 a.m.
