Petersen Nets First Goal of the Year at Poly

Marcy, NY – Senior Evan Petersen scored his first goal of the season to get the Roos within two, but host SUNY Poly earned a 4-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats got on the board first in the 32nd minute when Wakeley Banker converted off a penalty kick. The Roos held a 3-2 shots on goal advantage but the hosts took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
  • Poly made it 2-0 in the 60th minute when Payton Bennett took a corner kick from the right side and found Banker for a header into the right corner of net.
  • The hosts tacked on a third goal three minutes later when Abus Mohamed-Ali played a ball up the left side to Dominick Spychalski as he headed the ball forward beating a defender in as he finished into the net past a charging Owen Kwong.
  • The Roos got one back with less than four minutes remaining when Eric Randall played a ball into the box but a defender failed to clear the ball. The clearance attempt went right to the foot of Petersen who settled the ball and beat diving Wildcat keeper James D'Alessio.
  • Poly tacked on another score off a penalty kick in the 89th minute off the foot of Matthew McCord for the 4-1 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • SUNY Poly held the advantage in shots (14-6), shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (5-3).
  • The goal for Petersen was his second collegiate score.
  • Petersen, Martin Torales, Agustin Nunez and Michael Gavette had one shot on goal each for the Roos.
  • Kwong made one save in the loss, while D'Alessio turned aside three shots for the Wildcats.

The Roos are back in action on Saturday when they visit Cazenovia at 1 p.m.
