Culkin & Hodge Reach Double Figures in NAC Road Loss v. Mariners

Castine, ME – Joie Culkin and Mya Hodge scored in double figures but the SUNY Canton women's basketball team fell 92-54 to host Maine Maritime Academy in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Friday.  

THE BASICS
  • Result: Maine Maritime 92, SUNY Canton 54

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts jumped out to a quick 15-2 lead five minutes into the game and led by as many as 17 in the opening quarter. Maine Maritime led 24-9 after 10 minutes.
  • The Mariners took a 47-27 lead into intermission. Shanelle Borth led Canton with eight points in the opening half, while Sydney Echevarria-Briscoe had 10 points for MMA.
  • Canton played pretty evenly with the Mariners in the third quarter with the hosts holding a slim 19-18 edge.
  • MMA continued to hold a comfortable advantage as they scored 26 points in the fourth quarter for the 92-54 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Culkin led the Roos with a season-high 15 points and added eight rebounds. Hodge finished with 10 points and four rebounds on 4-for-7 shooting. Borth chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
  • Echevarria-Briscoe led MMA with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Makenzie Monzon (15), Maria Barela (13), Lauren Plissey (12), Lauren Cook (12) and Erianna Moore (11) all reached double digits for a potent scoring attack.
  • The Mariners scored 17 points off 13 Canton turnovers and outscored the Roos inside, 36-24.
  • MMA shot 50 percent from the field and 45.8% from three-point range.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The women's basketball returns to conference action on Saturday when they visit Thomas College at 2 p.m.
