Nunez’s Game-Winner, Kwong’s Key Saves Lift Roos Past Bard in OT, 1-0

Canton, NY – Agustin Nunez scored his first career goal in thrilling fashion as he split a scoreless tie 6 minutes, 32 seconds into overtime to lift the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a 1-0 win v. Bard College on Saturday.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 1, Bard 0 | 1 OT
  • Location: SUNY Canton Turf – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (1-0) | Bard (0-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams played pretty evenly through the opening half with minimal scoring opportunities. With just less than five minutes left in the opening half Martin Torales took a free kick into the box where Brandon McCorriston back flicked a header on goal.
  • The Roos held a 4-2 shots advantage and 2-0 shots on goal edge in the opening half. Bard had the upper hand in corner kicks, 3-2.
  • SUNY Canton had another great chance off a set piece just under two minutes into the second half as Torales' shot struck off the right post off a free kick.
  • With 25 minutes remaining Bard had a golden opportunity as Pat Devine delivered a beautiful cross into the box where Nic Soucy redirected a header to Owen Kwong's right. Kwong dove to save the ball and tip it off the left post and Pedro DeSouza made a heads up play to quickly clear the ball off the goal line before it went into the open net.
  • The scoring opportunities continued with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Will Austin played a ball in the box that was punched away by Bard keeper Gavin Hersey. The ball came to Jacob Deuel at the top left corner of the box as he drilled a low liner that was headed away at the right post as a defender made a key save.
  • With seven minutes left Peter Mahoney delivered a ball in the box to Caleb Ribeiro who's point blank header was once again saved beautifully by Kwong.
  • The teams would need extra time to decided Saturday's contest as they played to overtime.
  • It was Nunez who provided the heroics as captain Ellis Sanchez delivered a ball to Nunez streaking towards the box and he ripped a shot off the inside of the left post passed a diving Hersey as the Roos ran onto the field in celebration.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The game-winning goal is the first collegiate score for Nunez, a junior. He also has an assist to his name during his rookie season in 2019. Nunez posted a pair of shots on Saturday.
