Chavarri Strikes out 10 and Earns Win as Softball Closes out Season with Split v. Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Kayla Chavarri recorded the win on the mound and supplied three hits and drove in three runs to help her own cause as the SUNY Canton softball team closed out its season with a split in non-conference action at SUNY Potsdam on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos jumped out to a 3-0 lead after their at-bats in the third inning of Thursday's first game. Chavarri drove home Mackenzie Currie with an RBI single to center field in the first inning. Hailey Bentley reached on an error in the second as Shaylyn DeVito scored. Devito then brought across Jordan Knapp on an RBI fielder's choice in the third.
  • The Bears trimmed the deficit to two in the bottom of the third on an RBI triple.
  • Canton responded with a three-run third inning. Sophia Harris scored Madison Austin on an RBI ground out. Currie singled home Bentley and DeVito plated Knapp on an RBI single to left.
  • Potsdam tried to mount a late rally but Chavarri shut the door allowing just one more run in the seventh inning for the 6-2 victory.
  • Chavarri struck out 10 batters with just a single walk and allowed two earned runs on four hits in the complete game win.
  • Megan Fish surrendered two earned runs on 12 hits with two strike outs and one walk in seven innings.
  • Currie went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Knapp was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Chavarri went 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI and DeVito was 2-for-4 with a run and drove in a pair of runs.
  • Anna Grottola led Potsdam with two hits and an RBI
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Bears jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the second inning of the nightcap. Canton got one back in the third inning and plated six of their own in the fourth inning to briefly take a one run lead at 7-6.
  • Currie singled home Bentley in the third. The fourth inning saw Angelina LoPiccolo lead off with a solo shot to left field, her first collegiate long ball. With the bases loaded Harris walked home Felicity Machado. Austin and Bentley scored back-to-back runs on wild pitches. Chavarri brought Harris and Currie home on a 2 RBI single to conclude the scoring in the fourth for the Roos.
  • Potsdam regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth for the 9-7 final.
  • Anna Brown earned the win for the Bears allowing seven earned runs with two strike outs and six walks in seven innings.
  • Alaina Beane took the loss surrendering six earned runs with five strike outs and a walk in six innings.
  • Currie went 2-for-2 with a run, two walks and an RBI. Bentley recorded a hit, scored a pair of runs and drew a walk. Harris finished with a hit, a run, a walk and drove in a run. Chavarri drove in two runs, LoPiccolo homered and Machado and Austin also finished with hits.
  • Vanessa Brandt led the Bears going 3-for-4 with three runs, while Abby Hodgdon was 2-for-3 with two runs and 3 RBI.
