Gibson and Griffin Earn Wins as Baseball Sweeps Elmira, 7-4 and 4-1

Elmira, NY – Kieran Gibson and Jamere Griffin both picked up wins as the SUNY Canton baseball team swept a doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 4-1 on Thursday at Dunn Field in Elmira.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Both teams scored one run each in the first and fourth innings. Dyllon Bougor scored Canton's first run of the game when Zach Miner tried to advance on a dropped third strike and was thrown out at first.
  • Kevin Kapfer produced a first pitch 2 RBI single to left field in the fourth plating Ty Reed and Miner.
  • With the game knotted at 3-3 in the top of the fifth Nathan Welch brought home Miner on an RBI base hit to center and Dylan Allen scored Welch on a single through the right side. The Soaring Eagles trimmed the deficit to one with a run in the bottom half of the inning before the Roos added two insurance runs in the sixth.
  • On a 3-2 count Bougor placed a base hit down the left field line scoring Nick Shoemaker, who singled and stole second earlier in the inning. Miner capped the Canton scoring when he laid down a sacrifice bringing Bougor home.
  • Gibson earned the win on the mound in Game 1 tossing five innings finishing with six strike outs and allowing three earned runs.
  • Angus Adams took the loss for Elmira scattering five earned runs with two strike outs over five innings.
  • Danny Vargas picked up the save for the Roos pitching the final two innings without allowing a hit.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
 
  • Both teams scored one run each again in the nightcap, but that would conclude the Soaring Eagle scoring in Game 2.
  • Welch grounded out to first in the opening inning as Reed scored on the play.
  • The difference proved to be in the fourth frame where the Roos scored three times. Don Louis Rodriguez plated Noah Reyes on a ground out. Reed reached on a fielder's choice as Allen scored on a throwing error. Reed later scored a run of his own off an RBI single from Dom Maio.
  • Luis Torres-Rivera picked up the no-decision giving up one run with three walks in 1.2 innings. Griffin recorded his first win of the season tossing 3.1 innings in relief as he did not allow a single run and struck out four batters. Zach Bates closed the door in the final inning as he did not allow a single batter to reach base and fanned one batter.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
The Roos are back in action for a doubleheader at Elmira College on Saturday. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
