Alvarez Stops Career-High 43 Shots, Roos Drop First Game of Season to #4 Plattsburgh

Canton, NY – Sirena Alvarez was outstanding keeping the Roos within a goal in the third period but No. 4 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State scored two third period goals to earn a 4-1 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got the scoring started at the 11:01 mark of the opening period off the stick of Lily Stumm. Alvarez made 14 first period saves to keep Canton within one.
  • Plattsburgh doubled their lead at 4:07 of the middle period when Sara Krauseneck lit the lamp. Alvarez turned aside 17 second period shots as the hosts were still within striking distance after 40 minutes of play.
  • The Roos would get one back at 4:25 of the final period when Sarah Kosnaskie buried her fifth goal of the season. With the Roos in the early stages of a penalty kill Makayla Young collected the puck at the far boards below the right circle and saucered a pass to Kosnaskie in on the break away as she beat Chloe Beaubien blocker side.
  • Krauseneck added her second of the night at 8:47 and Bridget Orr added an insurance marker at 15:02 as the Cardinals held on for the win.   
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Plattsburgh held a 47-13 advantage in shots and 34-25 edge in face offs.
  • Alvarez finished with 43 saves posting at least 12 stops in each period.
  • Beaubien turned aside 12 shots for the Cardinals.
  • Both team's penalty kill units were strong as the Roos went 6-for-6 with a shorthanded goal and Plattsburgh killed their lone penalty.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in NEWHL action on Tuesday when they visit SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m.
