Alvarez Stops 35 Shots in NEWHL Loss at Cortland

Cortland, NY – Sirena Alvarez stopped 35 shots but Mia Hlasnick and Jillian Hlasnick provided a goal and assist each to lead host SUNY Cortland past the SUNY Canton women's hockey team in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) contest on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland held a slim 11-9 shots advantage in the opening period as neither team could find the back of the net.
  • The Red Dragons owned a 16-6 shots edge in the middle period and that paid off at 2:51 of the frame with the skater advantage. Mia Hlasnick lit the lamp off passes from Kait Bourgeois and Jillian Hlasnick.
  • Cortland added an insurance goal at 13:59 of the third period off the stick of Jillian Hlasnick.
  • Following a time out trailing by two with 2:20 remaining Canton pulled Alvarez for the extra skater. The Red Dragons scored on an empty netter with 37 seconds remaining to earn the 3-0 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cortland outshot Canton 38-24 and held the upper hand in face offs 32-21.
  • The Red Dragons were 1-for-1 on the power play, while Canton was 0-for-3.
  • Alvarez, the two-time defending NEWHL Goalie of the Week made 35 saves including 15 in the second period. Molly Goergen made 24 saves for the hosts.
