Springfield, MA – Joseph Werner tallied a game-high 20 points but the SUNY Canton men's basketball team wrapped up a historic season falling 74-49 to host and No. 17 nationally ranked Springfield College on Friday evening at Blake Arena in the NCAA First Round.

The NCAA Tournament appearance is the first for the Roos in program history as they finish the season 16-12 under first year Head Coach Shiva Senthil.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Springfield drained their first three three-pointers of the game and owned an 11-0 lead just 3:40 into the contest. The Pride would extend the lead to 15 multiple times before a late layup gave the hosts a 36-19 lead at intermission.
• Werner led the Roos with eight first-half points, while Daryl Costa paced Springfield with 13 points including three treys.
• The Pride shot 46.7 percent from three (7-for-15) in the opening half, while Canton held the upper hand in points in the paint, 16-12.
• Much like the start of the game, the hosts used a 7-0 run the first 70 seconds out of intermission to extend their lead to 23.
• Springfield continued to keep the foot on the gas pedal in the second half extending its advantage to as many as 29 en route to the victory.
• Both teams emptied their benches with just over three minutes remaining and the Roos saw a pair of reserves contribute. Juan Lamarche, who began the season as a team manager, was nothing but net on his three-pointer from the right wing with 2:29 to play.
• Less than two minutes later Brandon Blaker hauled down an offensive rebound and hit Kobe Harrington with a pinpoint pass for a layup.
• Werner led all players with 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting and added a team-high seven rebounds. Juztin Chambers-Phillips chipped in six points, while Danny Santana added five points and a team-high three assists.
• Jake Ross paced the Pride with 16 points, while Costa added 15. Noah Cummings and Heath Post chipped in nine points apiece, with Post hauling down a game-best 16 boards.
• The Roos shot 46 percent from the field in the second half and finished 40 percent for the game. Springfield hit on 42 percent of their field goals for the game but hit on 39 percent of their threes as they outscored Canton by 21 from behind the arc.
• The big difference besides the Pride's three-point shooting was 19 Canton turnovers that turned into 26 points for Springfield.

 

WHAT'S NEXT
This concludes the 2019-20 season for the Roos. The Pride advance to the NCAA Second Round where they square off with Hobart College on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
