Deuel and O’Neil Score as Men’s Soccer Completes Unbeaten NAC Weekend

Canton, NY – Shayne O'Neill supplied a goal and assist and Jacob Deuel scored his first goal in a Roo uniform as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team tallied a pair of second half goals in a 2-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory v. NVU-Johnson on Sunday.

THE BASICS
  • Result:  SUNY Canton 2, NVU-Johnson 0
  • Location: SUNY Canton Turf – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (4-3-2, 2-1-0 NAC) | NVU-Johnson (2-4-1, 0-2-0 NAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos had multiple quality scoring opportunities in the opening 15 minutes including a header by Ellis Sanchez that went just wide of the right post and a shot by O'Neill that hit the right post.
  • SUNY Canton controlled play in the opening half holding edges in shots (11-4), shots on goal (5-1) and corner kicks (4-2).
  • The Roos chances started to pay off early in the second half as they found the back of the net three minutes apart. Pedro DeSouza flicked the ball forward to Brandon McCorriston near midfield off a Badger goal kick. McCorriston played a one-touch forward to O'Neill in on the breakaway. He cut back to his right foot and placed a shot just inside the right post in the 52nd minute.
  • Minutes later John Gonzalez and Will Austin executed a give-and-go along the right sideline. Gonzalez crossed the ball in front where O'Neill touched a pass on to Deuel at the left post as he slid a shot just past a Johnson defender.
  • The Roos had another near chance moments later when Sanchez headed a ball across the front of goal where McCorriston's header struck off the crossbar. His rebound shot clanged off the right post to keep the lead at two as the Roos earned the victory.
  • The hosts finished the game with a 27-9 shots advantage including a 15-3 edge in shots on target.
  • Tyler Petersen turned aside three shots in the shutout for the Roos, while Zach Blaser made 12 stops for the Badgers.
