Canton, NY – Dustin Brown scored the game-winner just 53 seconds into the second overtime of his first collegiate game to lift the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a 1-0 win v. Wells in the season-opener for both teams on Friday evening.
The Roos (1-0) had some quality scoring chances early including a bouncing ball that
Kyle Smith hit just wide right and later
Evran Akman delivered a set piece that
Edward Malinoski, Jr. headed just high. Canton held the upper hand in corners (5-4) and shots (5-3), but Wells had the lone shot on goal as the teams played to a scoreless tie at intermission.
Canton had a quality chance in the 51st minute but
Brett Anderson's shot sailed just over the cross bar as the game remained tied. The Roos gave up a free kick from just outside the box in the 74th minute but Junger Vargas' shot bent over the cross bar. Minutes later the Roos created the next scoring opportunity when
Kevin Velasquez missed just wide of the right post.
The teams would need extra time to decide a winner and just 53 seconds into the second overtime Brown proved to be the hero. Akman played a beautiful free kick on the right side to
Kyle Smith who headed the ball across the face of goal. Brown's initial shot was turned aside by Colton Jaquith, but the rookie used quick reflexes to put home the rebound for the sudden-death victory.
Mouhammed Thiam stopped the only shot he faced for the shutout, while Jaquith made three saves for the Express (0-1).
