VanBuskirk Game-Winner Lifts Vikings Past Roos in Overtime, 3-2

CHS BOX SCORE

Canton, NY –  Vanessa VanBuskirk scored the game-winner with 1 minute 29 seconds left in overtime to lift visiting Salem State University to a 3-2 win over the SUNY Canton women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon.

The Roos (7-8-1) took a 1-0 lead when Ashley Gillies scored her third goal in two games picking off a pass at the offensive blue line and beat Sarah Plourde across the face of goal off the left post and in. Salem held a 10-8 shots advantage as the Roos led by a goal after one period.

Canton doubled their lead at 9:01 of the second on the power play. Tess Adams fed the puck from the bottom of the left circle to Micayla Macintyre on the right side of the point. She hit Whitney Bernier below the right circle and the puck deflected across the crease where Adams put home her 10th goal of the season.

Casie Curtin got the Vikings (2-11-2) on the board at 12:35 of the third as she beat Kristen Caporusso over the blocker after Kylie Currier freed the puck along the near-boards.

The Roos were then whistled for a pair of minor penalties with 5:26 remaining creating a 5-on-3 power play for Salem State and they converted 26 seconds later. Curtin played the puck across the crease to Jacqueline Sindoris who put home her first goal of the season. Kylie Currier also earned a helper on the play.

Canton was whistled for another penalty with 2:04 remaining but the Roos penalty kill came up big as the teams skated to overtime.
With 3:12 left in the extra session the Roos were called for an interference penalty giving the Viking power play another chance.

Salem State was whistled for a penalty to even play at 4-on-4 but with 1:40 remaining Canton took another penalty giving the Vikings a 4-on-3. Just 11 seconds later Salem State converted the game-winner as Danielle Kelley won the faceoff back to Catherine Salvetti who swung the puck to VanBuskirk to her right who went top shelf for the win.

Caporusso made 23 saves for the Roos, while Plourde turned aside 21 shots for the Vikings.
