Queensbury, NY – The SUNY Canton softball team set a new school record for wins as it went 2-1 on the second day of the American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Tournament on Sunday at the Adirondack Sports Complex.
The Roos (22-15) earned a 4-2 win v. Maine-Presque Isle in an elimination game and defeated Finlandia University 11-4 to force a winner-take-all against the Lions for the ACAA Championship. The Roos ultimately fell short 8-0 in the deciding game.
With the 22 wins the Roos now stand alone for the school record for wins in a season. The team eclipsed the previous mark set by the 1998 team that went 20-6 and the 2011 team that went 20-16.
Game 1 – Box Score
After advancing runners to third base in the first three innings, Canton broke through for a pair of runs in the fifth.
Rhea Coad led off with a single to center and
Rachel Thornhill moved her up to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Courtney Hyland hit a long drive to center field that was dropped by the center fielder allowing Coad to score.
Lizzie Bimonte produced a two out RBI single up the middle to plate Hyland after
Stefanie Miller moved her over to third on a ground out.
The Owls had runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth but
Jordan Podkladek induced a ground out and fly out to end the inning. UMPI had runners on the corners in the sixth but once again Podkladek got out of the jam.
The Roos added two key insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Thornhill drew a leadoff walk and Hyland doubled to put runners at second and third. Thornhill scored on a Miller RBI ground out and Bimonte singled home Hyland.
UMPI added a pair of runs in the seventh with three straight singles and a sacrifice fly but Podkladek retired the final three batters for the win. She struck out four batters giving up two earned runs in the complete game win.
Game 2 – Box Score
Finlandia jumped out to a 4-0 lead win four runs in the third inning on a 2 RBI single, an RBI single and a run scoring on an error. Hyland singled through the left side to plate Staltare and
The Roos bounced back with a four spot of their own in the fifth inning.
Brittany Staltare led off with a double to right field and Thornhill reached on a throwing error moving Staltare to third. Miller doubled home Thornhill and Bimonte followed with a 2 RBI single in the gap in left center to knot the game at four.
With the game tied at four heading to the seventh SUNY Canton brought seven runs across in the top half of the inning.
Valerie Clark singled home Hyland and Staltare plated Miller on an RBI base hit. Coad followed with a 2 RBI double in the gap in left center to plate Clark and
Cassidy Yetter. Thornhill continued the scoring outbreak with a 2 RBI single to center field and Hyland brought in Thornhill on a double to right center.
The Lions had a pair of runners reach base in the bottom half of the inning but Podkladek closed her second win of the day. She gave up two earned runs with four strike outs.
Game 3 – Box Score
Finlandia bounced back with an 8-0 win in the winner-takes-all championship game of the ACAA Tournament. The Lions scored one run each in the first and third innings and added two runs in the second and four in the fourth for the run-rule win in five innings.
Denia Bent earned the win on the mound tossing a three-hitter with five strike outs. Clark posted two hits for the Roos, while Coad had the other hit.
Miller, Bimonte and Podkladek were all named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts during the four games throughout the tournament.
