Akron, OH – The SUNY Canton softball bats exploded for seven runs in the third inning to earn an 8-0 win in the nightcap and finish with a split on the opening day of the 2017 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship.
After falling to Penn State Brandywine 10-0 in the opener the Roos (23-16) defeated Penn State Fayette 8-0 in an elimination game in the double elimination tournament. The win is the first in school history in the USCAA Tournament for the Roos. SUNY Canton will take on the loser of St. Mary of the Woods and UC-Clermont on Tuesday at 12 p.m.

Grace DeRosa tossed a no-hitter and walked one batter as Penn State Brandywine earned a 10-0 win in five innings over SUNY Canton in the opener of the USCAA National Championship on Monday.
Rhea Coad reached base on a walk to open the fourth inning to break up the perfect game.
DeRosa finished with five strike outs for the Lions.
Jordan Podkladek gave up 15 hits and six earned runs with three strike outs and a walk in five innings for the Roos.

SUNY Canton got on the board in the top of the first on a
Stefanie Miller RBI single to right field plating
Rhea Coad, who reached on an error to open the game. The Roos left the bases loaded in the second but exploded for seven runs in the third inning to break open an 8-0 lead.
Miller tripled to right field scoring
Courtney Hyland and
Desiree Pryce followed with an RBI double to right center.
Brittany Staltare plated
Rachel Thornhill on a base hit to left center and
Cassidy Yetter singled to center bringing home Pryce. Hyland rounded out the inning with a 2 RBI double scoring Staltare and Yetter.
Podkladek finished with a one hitter giving up just one walk. Staltare led the Roos with three hits, while Miller and Hyland finished with two hits and two RBI each. Thornhill, Pryce and Yetter all posted two hits apiece.
