Akron, OH – The SUNY Canton softball team extended its school record for wins in a season to 24 with a split in a pair of games on the second day of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament on Tuesday.
The Roos earned a 9-2 win v. the University of Cincinnati-Clermont in the opener before falling 4-1 to Carlow University in the nightcap. With its second loss Canton is officially eliminated from the tournament, but will play a game for fifth place in the tournament on Wednesday at 12 p.m. v. the loser of the Penn State Brandywine-Judson College game.
Game 1 – Box Score
UC-Clermont scored one unearned run on a pair of Canton errors in the opening inning but the Roos responded with a pair of runs in the third.
Valerie Clark and
Brittany Staltare reached base on back-to-back singles and
Rhea Coad followed with a 2 RBI double to left field.
The Roos added six runs in the fourth to open an 8-2 advantage.
Desiree Pryce reached on a fielder's choice scoring
Stefanie Miller. Clark followed with a 2 RBI single in the gap in right center and Staltare added an RBI base hit up the middle. Coad and
Courtney Hyland concluded the scoring with a pair of RBI ground outs.
SUNY Canton tacked on a run in the sixth on a Hyland RBI single after a Clark single and Coad double leading to the 9-2 final.
Jordan Podkladek tossed a complete game without giving up an earned run and struck out five batters.
Coad and Clark posted three hits each and combined for 5 RBI in the win. Staltare also had two hits and Hyland drove in a pair of runners.
Game 2 – Box Score
Carlow scored one run each in the first and second innings to open an early lead in a second elimination game on Tuesday. The Roos got one back in the fifth as Miller placed a bases loaded single up the middle to plate Coad but Clark was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Celtics added a pair of insurance runs on a 2 RBI triple in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Roos rallied with two outs in the seventh as Coad, Clark and Hyland produced three straight singles with Coad scoring on the Clark base hit. Canton had the tying run on first but Carlow got a strike out to end the game.
Podkladek gave up three earned runs with two strike outs on the mound.
