Coad Finishes with Four Hits in Opener as Softball Splits v. Houghton

Canton, NY – Senior Rhea Coad went a perfect 4-for-4 as the softball team earned a walk-off win in the opener to earn a Saturday split v. Houghton College.

The Roos (8-7) earned a 5-4 win in the first game before the Highlanders (8-18) received a no-hitter from Tanya Hatton in a 10-0 win in the nightcap.   

Game 1 – Box Score
After Houghton scored an unearned run in the top half of the first Kaleigh Foran singled home Coad in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. The Highlanders regained the lead on a double steal in the second inning but the Roos once again responded. Lizzie Bimonte scored on a throwing error by the catcher and Coad plated Alicia Evans on an RBI single to left.

Houghton tied the game once again in the third on a Hatton RBI single hbut Evans regained the one run lead on an RBI base hit to center to bring home Courtney Hyland. The visitors knotted the game at four apiece in the fifth as Kaylee Jentsch ripped an RBI double in the gap.

With the final at-bats as the home team, Jentsch issued three straight walks before Hatton came on in relief and walked in Desiree Pryce who earned the game-winning RBI scoring Foran.

Annie Sharlow improved her record to 2-2 giving up four hits and no runs pitching the final two innings in relief, while Jordan Podkladek earned the no-decision. Jentsch took the loss with 11 hits and four earned runs over six innings.

Coad led the offense going 4-for-4 with a run and RBI. Foran, Evans and Pryce drove in one run each.

Game 2 – Box Score
Hatton threw a no-hitter while walking three batters with nine strikeouts in a 10-0 win in six innings in the nightcap for Houghton. Bailey Shattell led the offense with three hits and drove in two runs, while Jentsch and Barbara Richert finished with two hits and 2 RBI each.

Kelsey White drew the loss for the Roos giving up six runs, only one of which was earned over one and two-thirds innings.
