Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton softball team split their home-opening doubleheader v. the University of Maine-Presque Isle behind a two-hitter from
Jordan Podkladek. The Roos (7-6) won the opener 3-0 before falling in the nightcap 5-4 to the Owls (10-8).
Game 1 – Box Score
Podkladek tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener striking out three batters as SUNY Canton scored two runs in the third and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Stefanie Miller placed a 2 RBI single through the right side to plate
Kaleigh Foran and
Rhea Coad in the third and
Desiree Pryce scored Miller on a fielder's choice in the sixth and that would be all Podkladek would need.
With the win Podkladek improved to 5-2 on the season, while Sara Packard fell to 9-8 giving up three earned runs over six innings.
Valerie Clark, Miller and Coad all posted two hits each in the opener for the Roos.
Game 2 – Box Score
The Owls scored three runs in the first two innings to take a 3-0 lead midway through the second. Canton responded with one run each in the second and fourth innings to get within one.
Brittany Staltare singled through the left side in the second to plate Pryce and Pryce scored again in the fourth as Staltare reached on a fielding error by the UMPI shortstop.
The visitors added two key insurance runs in the sixth on a Nicole Maruc 2 RBI double to left center.
The Roos got within one on a pair of runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles from Foran and
Courtney Hyland scoring
Jaedyn Ossont and Coad. Canton had a pair of runners in scoring position before the inning ended with an infield pop-up.
Lizzie Bimonte pinch-hit with two outs in the seventh and reached base on a single through the left side but a foul out ended the game.
Podkladek took the loss giving up three earned runs in one and two-thirds innings.
