Podkladek and Pryce Lead Softball to Wednesday Sweep v. Wildcats & Gryphons

Little River, SC – The SUNY Canton softball team swept a doubleheader against Bay Path University and Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach.

The Roos (2-1) defeated the Wildcats (3-2) by a score of 8-6 in the opener before coming back with a 3-2 victory v. the Gryphons (2-4).

Game 1 – Box Score
SUNY Canton got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first in the opener. Rhea Coad led off the inning with a single and Jaedyn Ossont moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Kaleigh Foran followed with a single to right center advancing to second on the throw, while Rhea Coad moved to third. Coad scored the first run of the contest on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the second on a pair of Canton miscues as the first run scored on a walk and the second after a batter was hit with the bases loaded.

The Roos responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Alicia Evans plated Brittany Miner on a sacrifice fly to center after she had reached on an error to open the inning. Brittany Staltare scored Stefanie Miller on an RBI ground out to the pitcher.

Bay Path regained a 4-3 lead after the top half of the third as pitcher Madison Goodhart helped her own cause with an RBI single, while Peck scored on a wild pitch. In a back-and-forth battle, the Roos replied in the bottom half on a Desiree Pryce sacrifice fly to score Foran before Miner singled home Courtney Hyland to make it 5-4 Roos after three.

Audrey Stepp knotted the game at five with an RBI single down the right field line in the fourth and Bay Path took the lead in the top of the fifth as Kiley Bissell reached on an error scoring Jailinne Ruiz.

Canton took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth as Evans scored Cassidy Yetter on an infield single and Staltare singled home Miller on a base knock to right field. Pryce added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI groundout to plate Ossont.

Annie Sharlow tossed three innings giving up four runs on two hits and seven walks while fanning four batters to earn the no-decision. Jordan Podkladek came on for the final four innings in relief to earn the victory scattering four hits and just one earned run, while striking out three.

Game 2 – Box Score
The Roos opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second after Hyland started the inning with a triple to right field. With one out Pryce doubled to left center to get Canton on the board.

Sarah Lawrence tied the game in the top of the third when Erin Chafatelli reached on a fielder's choice scoring Mackenzie Mindish. The Gryphons opened a 2-1 advantage in the top half of the fifth on a Sarah Shapiro base hit to right as Chafatelli scored.

SUNY Canton tied the game at two in the bottom half of the inning as Coad drove the ball into the gap in right center to score Miller. She led off the inning with a single and advance to second after an Evans sacrifice and to third after a Staltare ground out.

The Roos won the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning starting their run with one out on a Hyland base hit down the left field line. Yetter pinch-ran for Hyland and moved up to second on a Miner ground out before scoring on a Pryce double down the left field line.

Podkladek surrendered a leadoff hit in the seventh on a hard-hit ball to third but Kelseyy Copley lined into a double play as Ossont snatched the ball out of the air and fired back to Hyland at first to double off the runner, stalling the Gryphon comeback attempt.

Podkladek earned her second win of the day producing the complete game win as she gave up five hits and two earned over seven innings.

The softball team closes out its play at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic on Thursday when it takes on Gettysburg College at 9:30 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. first pitch v. Keystone College .
