Canton, NY – Sam Annorh scored a game-high 26 points as the SUNY Canton men's basketball team got off to a hot start on its way to an 86-62 win against Route 11 rival SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday evening in the Roos House.
The Roos (13-8) have won eight of their last night games and six straight at home. SUNY Canton shot 75 percent from the field over the opening 11 minutes to take a 30-12 lead after a three-pointer from
Romario Fletcher with 9:24 left in the first half. The Bears (2-20) bounced back a bit over the remainder of the period, but the Roos took a 47-38 lead into intermission.
SUNY Canton shot 57 percent (17-for-30) in the opening half, while Potsdam hit on 41 percent (15-37) of its field goals. Annorh led the Roos with 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting, while
Adrian Williams finished with 12 points. Nosa Onabor paced all players with 20 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Roos extended their lead to 18 just over midway through the second half after Jayquan Thomas was whistled for a technical foul after Fletcher was fouled on a shot attempt. Fletcher calmly stepped to the line and sunk all four free throws to extend the Canton lead to 68-50. Canton extended its lead to as many as 24 (79-55) with 3:42 remaining en route to the convincing win.
Annorh led all players with 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting, while Williams chipped in 19 points hitting three from long distance. Fletcher added 13 points and nine rebounds, while
Rashad Richardson finished with nine points.
Ibu Smith and
Walt Jeter tallied seven points apiece, while Jeter hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Onabor paced the Bears with 25 points, but was limited to just five after intermission. Dante Langley added 12 in the scoring column for Potsdam.
Fletcher was honored in a pre-game ceremony for reaching the 1,000-point scoring plateau earlier this season. He accomplished the feat on December 17th at Old Westbury and entered tonight's contest with 1,231 career points.
The Roos coaching staff wore Autism Lapel Pins on their suits to help build awareness and show support for Autism Speaks and the families affected by autism.
